Colossians

I.  Introduction

  • The author is Paul the Apostle Paul is his Greek name and Saul is his Hebrew name as is the custom of the Jews to have two names even today this day.
  • Tradition says that Paul wrote Colossians at prison in Rome. Acts 28:16, 30, 31.
  • Colosse is about 140 miles from Ephesus.
  • It seems that Paul never visited Colosse but traveled close to this area when he was at Ephesus and went to Antioch on his third missionary journey.
  • Colosse was like a tri-city with Laodicea and Hierapolis.
  • Colosse was known for its acceptance of oriental mysticism.
  • Laodicea was known for its wealth and also its philosophers
  • See Rev. 3:14 -22  known for its wealth but really poor
  • It was also the chief city of the Phrygia region.
  • Hierapolis was known for the birthplace of Epictetus a moralist
  • Epictetus taught in Rome and Nicopolis of Greece.
  • The church at Colosse was probably started by Epaphras Phil 1:4-8, and 4:12, 13.
  • Paul was probably teaching at the school of Tyrannus in Acts 19:9, 10 – 26
