Introduction
While speaking at a conference some time ago, I had the opportunity to engage in discussion with a very intelligent man who stated that he used to be a young earth creationist such as myself. Nowadays he explained, he felt that faith in the biblical record was not essential to salvation - least of all the belief in the literality of Genesis 1-11. He said he would contact me via e-mail, and though I generally dislike e-mail debates, I agreed to engage him further.
